Business executives from more than 20 major enterprises in Jakarta and the surrounding area participated and shared their ideas in the seminar.
The event began with an opening speech from the Rector of Sampoerna University. Dr. Wahdi Yudhi. He stressed the importance of collaboration with industrial world in order to provide a high quality education that meet the global standards, and produce ready to industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) graduates.
Wahdi said, “To realize our vision and mission to become a world-class university, Sampoerna University is always eager to engage and partner with the local and international industries. By doing this, we could get some feedback on how to provide a high quality education that meet their needs”.
Afterward, the Dean of FET, Dr. Ammar Aamer, gave the welcoming remarks. Aamer explained to the audience that the Faculty of Engineering and Technology is equipped with the most sophisticated laboratory equipment to provide students with required hands-on experience, as well as employing internationally experienced lecturers to provide a high quality Engineering and Technology education.
“Our curricula and education facilities have been co-developed with our partners based on the American standard education system. Our Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering study programs are offered in collaboration with the University of Arizona. In addition, our Computer Science/Informatics and Visual Communication Design (New Media) study programs are offered in collaboration with Broward College in Florida. This makes the course credits earned by the students in Sampoerna University transferrable to American Universities”, said Aamer in his speech.
The honorable speakers on the seminar started with Prof. Dr. Kikuo Kishimoto [Professor Emeritus and Ex-Dean of School of Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology]. He shared his views and experience on Japan’s response to the challenge of IR 4.0 and how the Japanese Universities conduct their academics activities.
A panel discussion was then opened with three influential figures from the Indonesian engineering and technology industry, (1) Ms. Donna Murdijanto Priadi [Government Affairs & Policy Director General Electric], (2) Mr. Smiley Kuntjoro [Vice President of Product and R&D, LOKÉT, Go-Jek Group], and (3) Mr. Pradipto Sugondo [Executive Officer, R&D Center, PT. Astra Daihatsu Motor]. The Head of Mechanical Engineering Study Program, Dr. Farid Triawan, led the discussion by also inviting some audiences to share their perspective and comment on the topic.
The role of local industry in realizing a high quality education, key challenges and public awareness are some key topics that were discussed intensively among the participants. All speakers provided insights from the standpoint of industry players and how an international education standard will play a big role in shaping the Engineers’ skills in the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
