On November 9th, 2023, FETINADEC held a guest lecture event for FET Students, Lecturers, and Staff. This guest lecture event demonstrated the adaptability of academic forums. The guest was an expert lecturer from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Dr. Ong Chi Wei.
Dr. Ong Chi Wei is an expert lecturer in the field of biomedical engineering. With a research focus on biomechanics, fluid-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamics, and finite element analysis. The guest lecturer’s interdisciplinary approach is to the complexities of modern biomedical engineering research.
In this guest lecture, Dr. Ong shared his insight on the latest innovative research on Aortic Disease using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Dr. Ong explained that the CFD can help us to combine computer science with engineering science using AI to solve governing questions of fluid by using computational methods under various physical conditions to study different phenomena. On the other hand, Dr. Ong also explained the other applications of CFD, for example, to optimize the speed of racing cars. Here, the CFD is applied in the optimization of the design of cars that can deal with turbulence.
For the application of CFD on Aortic Disease, Dr. Ong explained the background introduction on why it is urgent to do this research. Most people do not know they have an aneurysm until it is life-threatening. Over 60% of those with ruptured aneurysm will die. Therefore, this reason became the biggest motivation for Dr. Ong and his team to research the prevention of aortic aneurysms.
In conclusion, our comprehensive exploration of Aortic Disease and Computational Fluid Dynamics has provided an understanding of the intersection of engineering and biomedical. The active and insightful participation from both students and lecturers has enhanced our lecture. As we investigate deeper into this interdisciplinary field, it is evident that collaborative efforts are essential for advancing our knowledge and developing innovative solutions. We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions.
As the guest lecture neared its end, all attendees and the guest lecturer convened for a commemorative photo. In summary, the conclusion of this lecture was favorable and predicts future engagements.
