Remembering the Life and Impact of Dr. Wahyoe Soedarmono: A Remarkable Scholar, Mentor, and Beloved Colleague

In the world of academia, some individuals leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those they encounter. Dr. Wahyoe Soedarmono was one such person. He was more than a Dean of the Faculty of Business, at Sampoerna University; he was a scholar, a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of inspiration. 

The great American writer Albert Pike once wisely said, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” Dr. Wahyoe embodied this philosophy. He was a giver in every sense of the word. He gave selflessly to his work, his students, the academic community, and our university. His life was a testament to the power of living in a way that leaves a lasting impact on the world and those around us.

Born on December 8, 1983, in Surakarta, Dr. Wahyoe’s life was also enriched by his family. He was a loving husband to his wife, Mrs. Frena Yulyani, and a proud father to two wonderful children, Arsyila Nayfa Ghaisani and Arsya Nevan Soedarmono. His family was the bedrock of his existence, and their love and support fueled his passion for life and learning.

Dr. Wahyoe began his journey at Sampoerna University on September 2, 2013, as a Full-time Management Lecturer. Over the years, he advanced through the ranks, becoming the Head of the Management Study program on January 1, 2016, and eventually taking on the role of Interim Dean of the Faculty of Business on January 1, 2022. His rise within the university was a testament to his dedication and commitment to the pursuit of excellence.

In his academic journey, Dr. Wahyoe was a luminary. He held a Ph.D. in Money, Finance, and Banking from Université de Limoges in France and specialized in areas such as bank risk management, prudential regulations, financial sector development, access to finance, early warning systems of financial crises, and macro-financial economics. His research prowess was evident through the publication of 22 academic articles in reputable international journals indexed by Scopus, one of the world’s leading journal platforms. His opinions were frequently sought after and appeared in publications like The Jakarta Post, making him a respected voice in the field.

But Dr. Wahyoe was more than just an academic; he was a dedicated servant to the greater community. He actively engaged in research and policy discussions with various financial sector regulators and governmental bodies in Indonesia, contributing his expertise to shaping the nation’s financial landscape. Additionally, his role as a Fiscal Policy Analyst and Financial Sector Consultant for The World Bank Indonesia Country Office exemplified his commitment to making a difference on a larger scale.

He played a pivotal role in elevating the Faculty of Business at Sampoerna University to new heights. Under his leadership as Dean, the faculty experienced growth in both student enrollment and research activity, enhancing the overall quality of the educational program. His generous sharing of knowledge, expertise, and skills empowered countless students and colleagues.

His influence resonated widely in the Indonesian banking and finance community, particularly with HSBC Bank, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of banking education. He led the charge in reforming and updating the curriculum, leaving an indelible mark on thousands of students through workshops, conferences, and events held across Indonesia. His research is widely referenced by prominent financial institutions and policymakers in Indonesia, such as BI, OJK, and LPS, and his financial literacy programs and Business Competitions have positively impacted countless individuals across Indonesia since 2015.

He was more than a colleague; he was a warm-hearted friend, a loving husband, and a devoted father to his children.

The memories we hold of Dr. Wahyoe are filled with warmth, thoughtfulness, loyalty, and a friendly sense of humor. His cheerful demeanor was infectious, often accompanied by a big, wide smile that brightened the lives of those fortunate enough to cross his path. In his career at Sampoerna University, he approached his work with unmatched passion, integrity, and energy, setting an example for all of us to follow.

The world has lost a brilliant, dynamic individual, and we, who knew him, have lost a true friend. Yet, the sorrow of his loss is tempered by the privilege of having known him, worked alongside him, and been inspired by his presence.
